Calendula is a bittersweet, salty herb, that stimulates the liver, gall bladder, and uterus. It soothes the digestive system, clears infections, and is said to support the heart.
Benefits
- Calendula is beneficial in skin care, soothing inflammation, controlling bleeding and healing damaged tissue and in cases (internally and externally) where the skin is broken.
- It is most effective to help heal wounds and has shown to stimulate the development of granulation tissue. It has immune stimulant properties as well as an estrogenic effect.
- It has an anti-inflammatory as well as spasmolytic effect and is used with great effect for inflammation and small ulcers in the mouth and throat.
- Calendula is also used to improve digestion and stimulate the production of bile, healing gastric ulcers and regulating menstrual disorders.
- It is used in folk medicine to treat ulcers, colitis, hepatitis, swollen glands, menstrual problems, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
How it is used
- For infusions and salves for skin soothing and cleansing.
- Teas, oils, skincare, culinary garnishes.
Brewing Infusion Calendula Dried Flowers
- Preparing an infusion, placing 1-2 teaspoons of dried flowers in a teapot or mug.
- Cover with hot boiling water.
- Place on the lid or cover your cup with a saucer
- Allow the mixture to steep for 10 to 15 minutes or overnight.
- Then strain the tea and serve.
- Add if you prefer honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavor.
Side effects
- Its use should be avoided by pregnant or breast feeding women.
- Preparations of calendula flowers are likely safe for most people when taken by mouth or applied to the skin.
- Calendula may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Members of this family include ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, and many others.
