Arnica is a genus of perennial herbs belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It has been used in folk medicine for ages, for its ability to speed the healing of tissues.– Arnica is applied to the skin for pain and swelling associated with bruises, aches, and sprains.

It is also used on the skin to treat insect bites, arthritis, muscle and cartilage pain, chapped lips, and acne.– Usage of arnica extract rejuvenates your scalp and stimulates the hair follicles, helping to strengthen your hair and preventing it from falling prematurely.

In addition to its medicinal uses, arnica is beneficial in alleviating feelings of depression and emotional distress. It is often used in healing sachets to restore emotional balance and a sense of tranquility.

It is also used in the treatment of conditions like a backache, fibromyalgia, influenza, headaches, migraines and hemorrhoids. Applied topically for soothing soreness. Balms, oils, compresses, cosmetics.

How it is used

  • This plant should never be consumed orally, only external use is recommended.
  • On the skin as an infusion to spray on for aches and sprains. 1 teaspoon dried herbs in 1/2 cup water infused for 5–7 minutes.
  • Create a tincture by pouring vodka (or other alcohol at least 70 proof) over freshly picked flowers.
  • Seal tightly and let stand for at least a week in a sunny spot or warm area.
  • Filter, put in a well-sealed container, and store out of direct sunlight.

Side effects

  • Not recommended even topically while pregnant or nursing.
  • Arnica is never to be used internally and it is important not to ingest any form of arnica except homeopathic.
  • In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
  • It is also not recommended to apply to broken or cut skin and some people may notice skin irritation from the use of arnica topically.
