Latin Name: Galium Aparine L.

Origin Country: Hungary

Galium Aparine, commonly known as cleavers,  clivers, goosegrass, catchweed, sticky willy or sticky weed, is a fast-growing annual plant in the Rubiaceae family. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, but it is now widespread across temperate regions of the world.

Its leaves are narrow, arranged in whorls around the stem, and also bear fine hairs that give it a sticky or rough texture. The plant’s texture and clinging ability give it its common names. The flavor of Galium aparine is mild and green, somewhat like cucumber or grass, though it’s not commonly eaten raw due to its rough texture. It has traditionally been used fresh or dried in teas or as part of natural dyeing processes.

Benefits

  • Traditionally, it has been used to soothe irritated tissues when used externally or internally, especially during seasonal changes.
  • Cleavers have been historically applied topically or consumed as tea for skin support, particularly in traditional wellness practices.
  • Its combination of diuretic and lymphatic action has made cleavers a popular herb in traditional seasonal tonics aimed at mild detoxification.
  • The plant is known to support urinary function by increasing urine flow, which may help with natural fluid balance and toxin elimination.

Hot Brewing Infused Galium Aparine Tea

  • Place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a teapot for each cup of tea you intend to brew.
  • Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer).
  • Allow the mixture to steep for 10 to 15 minutes or overnight.
  • Then strain the tea and serve.
  • If you wish add honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavor.
  • Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day.

Side effects

  • Cleavers are generally considered safe when consumed in moderate amounts.
  • Some individuals may be allergic to cleavers and face symptoms like swelling or itching.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a health provider before using cleavers.
