Latin Name : Medicago Sativa L.

Origin Country: Hungary

Medicago sativa, commonly known as alfalfa, is a perennial flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. Alfalfa, also known as lucerne, is a plant that has been cultivated as animal feed for hundreds of years. It is made from the mature leaves of the alfalfa plant. It appears to have originated in South and Central Asia, but has since been cultivated throughout the world for centuries. Alfalfa is one of nature’s richest foods, for which reason it was called the “father of all foods” (“al-fal-fa”) by the ancient Arabs. In addition to being used as animal feed, it also has a long history of use as a medicinal herb for humans. Alfalfa is sweet and slightly bitter in taste and refreshing in action.

How it is used

Alfalfa Tea

Heat 1 cup (250ml) water to about 80-85°C (176-185°F). It advised to avoid boiling the water in order to preserve the nutrients. Add 1 teaspoon of alfalfa powder to a cup. Pour the hot water over the powder and stir well. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes to allow the nutrients to infuse. Strain, if you prefer a smoother tea, or drink as is. Add sweeteners like honey or lemon if desired. Enjoy warm or allow to cool for an iced version.

Alfalfa Smoothie

Add 1-2 teaspoons of alfalfa powder to your smoothies for a nutrient boost. It blends well with fruits like berries, bananas, or citrus.
