Ayurveda, derived from the Sanskrit words Ayur (life) and Veda (knowledge), is an ancient system of Indian medicine with roots tracing back approximately 6,000 years. Although the earliest written Vedas date to around 1,500 years ago, this profound wisdom was traditionally passed down orally through generations.

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, the physical body is governed by three fundamental energies, or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas exist in varying proportions within each individual, influencing their physical, mental, and emotional constitution (prakriti). The balance or imbalance (vikriti) of these doshas directly affects an individual’s health and well-being.

Each dosha is composed of two of the five fundamental elements (panca-mahabhutani) and is characterized by unique qualities (guna).

The three doshas are:

  • Vata — Composed of space (akasha) and air (vayu), Vata represents the principle of movement, governing bodily functions related to motion such as the nervous system, respiration, and circulation. Vata’s qualities include coldness, dryness, lightness, subtlety, mobility, sharpness, hardness, roughness, and fluidity. It primarily resides in the colon and is subdivided into five sub-doshas: Prana, Udana, Samana, Apana, and Vyana.
  • Pitta — Made of fire (tejas) and water (jala), Pitta governs transformation and digestion, both physically (through stomach function and digestive fire, or agni) and mentally (emotional processing). Its qualities are heat, oiliness, lightness, subtlety, mobility, sharpness, softness, smoothness, clarity, and fluidity. Pitta’s main seat is the small intestine, with five sub-doshas: Pacaka, Ranjaka, Sadhaka, Alochaka, and Bhrajaka.
  • Kapha — Composed of water (jala) and earth (prithvi), Kapha represents cohesion and stability, maintaining bodily structure and lubrication. Its qualities include coldness, moisture, heaviness, coarseness, stability, dullness, softness, smoothness, and density. Kapha is primarily located in the chest and head, with five sub-doshas: Kledaka, Avalambaka, Bodhaka, Tarpaka, and Slesaka.

These doshas classify psycho-physical tendencies and potential dysfunctions. According to Ayurveda, disease arises from doshic imbalances. Identifying which dosha is out of balance enables practitioners to recommend remedies to restore equilibrium, thereby promoting healing and wellness.

The primary causes of doshic imbalance are:

  • Prajna-aparadha: The error of the intellect, manifested by repeating harmful actions or habits despite knowing their negative consequences, driven by material desires or impulses.
  • Kala-parinama: The natural fluctuations of the doshas throughout the day, seasons, and lifespan.
  • Asatmyendriyartha-samyoga: Improper use of the senses, either through excess or deficiency.

The VATA herbal tea blend is designed to pacify the qualities of Vata dosha — particularly its tendencies toward coldness, dryness, and restlessness — by offering warming, moistening, and grounding effects. Ingredients like cinnamon and ginger bring heat and stimulation, licorice adds soothing moisture, fennel and cardamom support digestion, while orange peel imparts a gentle uplifting aroma.

This infusion is ideal for those who seek to balance Vata’s dynamic energy, calm the nervous system, and promote overall digestive and circulatory health. Enjoy this tea as part of a mindful daily routine to nurture harmony and vitality in body and mind.
