Hojicha Green Tea is a premium roasted Japanese Green Tea originating from the renowned tea-producing province of Shizuoka, Japan, our Hojicha (Houjicha) is a carefully crafted roasted green tea harvested in the late spring. Derived from the traditional Bancha green tea leaves, this tea undergoes a unique roasting process that imparts a warm, soothing character and completely eliminates theine, making it an ideal choice for all ages and especially suited for those sensitive to theine.

Hojicha is a distinct type of Japanese green tea created by roasting Bancha leaves-sometimes Sencha leaves are used as well-resulting in a rich amber infusion with a sweet, mellow, and comforting flavor profile. Unlike the fresh, grassy, and slightly astringent Bancha tea it originates from, Hojicha features toasty, caramelized notes reminiscent of wood bark, caramel, and coffee, making it a delightful tea to savor throughout the day and a perfect companion on cozy, rainy afternoons.

One of the defining qualities of Hojicha is its zero theine content, a result of the roasting process that breaks down the theine molecules. This makes it an excellent option not only for children but also for those who experience digestive discomfort or energy imbalances from regular green teas. Hojicha shares this theine-free quality with Kukicha tea, although the two differ in source parts of the tea plant: Hojicha is made from roasted leaves, whereas Kukicha is made from roasted twigs and stems.

Hojicha’s smooth, warming character makes it well-suited for pairing with strong-flavored foods such as cheeses or fried dishes, where its natural sweetness can provide a pleasant contrast. Its warming nature also makes it popular during colder seasons as a comforting and invigorating beverage.

Hojicha retains many of the health properties of Bancha, while offering additional benefits linked to its theine-free status. It has diuretic and detoxifying properties, blood sugar regulation effects (hypoglycemic properties), alkalinizing effects beneficial to overall body balance, rich source of minerals, antioxidants, and L-Theanine-a compound known for its relaxing, anti-depressive, and calming effects.

In macrobiotic traditions, Hojicha is regarded as a warming tea, recommended for consumption during cold or damp weather, for supporting sensitive digestion, and as a tonic during seasonal illnesses such as the flu. For an even more warming effect, especially in macrobiotic practice, some prefer a prolonged boil-taking care to cover the pot to preserve minerals

Hojicha’s unique roasted flavor also makes it an excellent ingredient in culinary applications. Finely ground, it can be incorporated into baked goods like cakes and cookies to impart a subtle toasted note. When brewed, it enriches desserts such as custards and panna cotta with its warm, aromatic depth.

We pride ourselves on sourcing only the finest teas from small-scale, artisanal, and organic farms. Our Hojicha is meticulously selected to guarantee exceptional quality, authenticity, and ethical production standards. Enjoy a premium, traditionally crafted Japanese green tea with the peace of mind that your choice supports sustainable agriculture and fair practices.
