Honey Black – Black Tea

Origin: Taiwan
Infusion Temperature: 90°-95°° Celsius
Infusion Time: 2-3 minutes
Serving Size: 3 g/200 ml

Honey Black Tea is a remarkable expression of Taiwanese tea craftsmanship an exceptional black tea inspired by the elegance of Oriental Beauty, yet crafted through a unique black tea processing method. Grown at 400 meters above sea level and harvested in late May 2024, this tea offers an intriguing fusion of natural sweetness, depth, and artisanal character.

What sets Honey Black Tea apart is its distinctive production process. Like Oriental Beauty, this tea owes much of its complex aroma to the bites of the Jacobiasca formosana leafhopper, a tiny insect that feeds on the tea leaves before harvest. This interaction triggers a natural defense response in the plant, enhancing the leaves’ aromatic compounds and resulting in a naturally honeyed, fruity flavor. However, unlike Oriental Beauty (which is processed as an oolong), Honey Black Tea undergoes a higher level of oxidation-approximately 85% placing it firmly in the black tea category while preserving the nuanced fragrance and elegance of its oolong cousin.

This tea is cultivated and crafted by Wang Wei Chan, a fourth-generation Taiwanese tea master, whose family has dedicated decades to the art of tea cultivation. His meticulous attention to detail-from leaf selection to oxidation and drying ensures a consistently high-quality product that reflects both tradition and innovation. In photographs taken on-site, Master Wang is seen alongside his father, underscoring the generational expertise behind every harvest.

Honey Black Tea is incredibly smooth, offering a naturally sweet and fruity cup with distinct honeyed undertones. The leafhopper’s influence imparts notes of ripe stone fruits, soft floral hints, and a subtle spice that lingers gently on the palate. Despite its complexity, the tea maintains a balanced and approachable flavor profile, making it an excellent choice for both seasoned tea drinkers and those new to Taiwanese black teas.

Brewing Recommendations:

Infusions: 2 to 3 steeps
Water Temperature: 90-95°C
Infusion Time: 1-3 minutes, adjusting to taste and steep

Honey Black Tea can be enjoyed using traditional or modern brewing method techniques like Gong Fu Cha or standard infusion.

With its complex flavor, artisanal origin, and excellent value, Honey Black Tea stands out as one of Taiwan’s most delightful black teas. Its refined character and naturally sweet profile make it perfect for daily enjoyment, special occasions, or thoughtful gifting. Whether you prefer the meditative ritual of Gong Fu Cha or a single comforting cup, this tea promises an elegant and satisfying experience.
