A comforting classic from Japan’s Tea Culture Genmaicha, often affectionately known as “popcorn tea”, is a traditional Japanese green tea blended with roasted and puffed brown rice. Literally meaning “natural rice tea” (genmai-cha), this beloved blend was originally known as the “people’s tea” a humble, nourishing drink made more accessible by the addition of rice, which both stretched the tea supply and enhanced its flavor.

Our organic Genmaicha is made with high-quality Bancha leaves, harvested from the second or third flush of the tea plant, combined with whole-grain roasted brown rice. This creates a warm, toasty, and subtly sweet flavor profile that is both comforting and versatile, perfect for morning rituals, mealtime pairings, or evening relaxation.

Genmaicha has a gentle, approachable character, ideal for those new to green tea or sensitive to bitterness. The aroma is warm, nutty, and slightly caramelized with hints of roasted grain. The flavor is a balanced combination of grassy green tea and the toasty sweetness of brown rice, with almost no bitterness and the body is smooth and mellow, with a soft finish and light umami undertones

Unlike many green teas, Genmaicha is low in theine and less astringent, making it suitable for consumption at any time of day, including evenings. Its mild profile and digestive qualities also make it popular with children and sensitive tea drinkers.

Thanks to its Bancha base, Genmaicha retains many of the antioxidant and mineral-rich properties of green tea, including catechins and vitamins, while the roasted rice contributes a naturally warming and balancing effect. Supporting digestion and gut comfort, gentle on the stomach-ideal for those who find regular green tea too harsh. Being low in theine, making it perfect for evening or cold-weather sipping. Traditionally enjoyed during seasonal changes for its grounding energy.

Genmaicha’s origins are tied to everyday life in historical Japan, where the addition of rice made green tea more affordable and accessible to the general population. One popular legend tells of a servant named Genmai who accidentally spilled roasted rice into a samurai’s tea. Though the story ends tragically, the resulting blend was so delicious that it became a lasting staple-and was named in the servant’s memory: Genmaicha.

While originally a practical solution, Genmaicha has evolved into a cherished staple across Japan and the world, enjoyed by tea lovers from all walks of life. Today, it is served at breakfast, paired with savory foods, and even used as a culinary ingredient in innovative dishes.

Genmaicha can also be cold-brewed for a refreshing, low-theine iced tea or steeped stronger to pair with rich or salty dishes, such as cheese, grilled meats, or umami-rich broths.

We are proud to offer a certified organic Genmaicha sourced from small-scale, artisanal producers in Japan. This particular blend respects the traditional roots of Genmaicha by using Bancha tea.

Whether you’re seeking a cozy breakfast companion, a tea to serve with meals, or a gentle infusion to wind down in the evening, our Genmaicha is a perfect choice for every day.
