The historic Balasun Tea Estate, established in 1871, is located near Sonada in the Darjeeling region and spans elevations from approximately 375 to 1,700 meters. The estate lies along the scenic Balasun River, surrounded by rolling hills, open valleys, and rich Himalayan biodiversity.
Its unique microclimate—characterized by cool winters and warm summers—creates ideal growing conditions for producing teas with a fuller body and distinctive muscatel character. The surrounding landscape is equally remarkable, with views of Tiger Hill, Tibetan stupas, forest reserves, and lush vegetation including oak, chestnut, magnolia, rhododendron, and orchid forests.
Since its acquisition by Jay Shree Tea & Industries in 2005, the estate has undergone significant modernization and sustainability improvements, including an upgraded tea factory technology, an improved quality control systems, a reforestation and environmental conservation programs. Fair Trade, Organic, HACCP and Rainforest Alliance certifications. These efforts have significantly enhanced the consistency and quality of Balasun teas.
The dry leaf and infusion reveal a rich and elegant aromatic profile of fresh spring blossoms, white flowers and orchid notes, muscat grape sweetness, soft honey tones, light citrus peel, gentle green shoots and subtle woody elegance
